12 foodie events in Vancouver this week: September 5-11


With the last long weekend of summer coming to an end, it feels like we are finally entering fall.

Whether or not this is good news for you, it means we’re fully in fall food event mode.

From a farm-to-table vegan dinner at Burdock and Co. to a community block party in Coquitlam, this week is shaping up to be fun and tasty.

Here are our top picks of foodie events to check out in Vancouver from September 5-11.

Unique events

Japanese Market Autumn Fair

With two successful summer markets in the books, the Japanese market returns for a fall edition. With eleven food vendors – including a few newcomers like Carp and Aiyaohno Cafe – as well as Japanese musical and cultural performances, produce for sale from local artisans and an on-site samurai, the event is a must-do this month.

Farm-to-table vegan dining at Burdock & Co.

This “Barley Moon” themed dinner is hosted by Maest Food at Mount Pleasant’s Burdock & Co. and will feature a six-course tasting menu including a first glass of wine. Vegetables from local farms will be used to create the dishes, which may include smoked celaria ravioli, cardamom waffles and 12-hour squash pavé (exact menu will depend on availability).

When: September 5 at 5:30 p.m. or 8 p.m.

Street party on McAllister Avenue

This day-long street party, hosted by the City of Port Coquitlam, will include food trucks, a beverage garden, live entertainment and more. There will also be a barbecue after a charity hockey game between the Coquitlam firefighters and the RCMP.

When: Saturday, September 10 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Bouchonne Half-Marathon

The annual Fun Race takes place on the beautiful sunny slopes of Oliver Osoyoos, in tandem with other weekend highlights like the Primavera Dinner and Finish Line Party. Historically, to register for the marathon, hopeful participants had to enter a lottery system for a chance to buy tickets, but this year a limited number of tickets were available for purchase online. If you were unsuccessful in securing a ticket, you can still grab a Party at the Finish Line ticket.

Tea Cube Pastry Mid-Autumn Festival

Tea Cubed Patisserie is a collaborative dessert brand made up of three local companies: Niche Creamery, Thirstea Beverages and Kukki Jar. This week, Tea Cubed Patisserie will bring its unique treats to Burnaby Station Square PriceSmart Foods for an exclusive Mid-Autumn Festival pop-up.

On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, you can try the local brand’s signature ice cream puffs with milk tea slushies in two different varieties: a white peach ice cream puff with a milk tea slushie oolong and a salted egg yolk ice cream puff with London Fog slush.

When: September 9 to 11; Fridays and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.; Sundays from noon to 5:30 p.m.

Coquitlam Community Block Party

Hosted by the Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festivals, this edition of Coquitlam will feature a rotating roster of food trucks, live music and a craft market. There will also be an outdoor cafe.

When: September 9 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.; September 10 from 11 p.m. to 8 p.m.; September 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Recurring events

Taste of Abby Fall Food Festival

Taking place from September 9 to 18, this gourmet period begins with a night market on the day of the launch. This event will take place on September 9 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Jubilee Park (2552 McCallum Road, Abbotsford). The ticket price includes admission and eight tokens for small plates and drinks. From there, people can enjoy seasonal farmer experiences, featured collaborations, special menus and citywide promotions through September 18.

September 18 also marks an awards ceremony. The first Taste of Abby Food & Farm Awards aim to “recognize the best culinary talents and agricultural producers in Abbotsford”.

Tacofino Collab and Fundraising with Mr. Bannock

A Tacofino Mix and Mr. Bannock (Paul Natrall) returns for a second year this September with a Wild Bison Taco made with ethically raised bison, seasonal Chilliwack mashed corn, spicy pineapple salsa and sweet and sour onions on a corn tortilla. The collaboration, available September 1 through September 30 at Tacofino Ocho, will focus on showcasing traditional Indigenous ingredients. Proceeds will go to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Tacofino Food Truck and Mr. Bannock will also be at West Coast Night on August 31, where West Coasters will share ancestral stories through song and dance.

Vegan Night Market

Canada’s first 100% plant-based night market continues all fall with a ton of brands to explore inside and outside the newly renovated Waldorf Hotel.

The delicious, vegan-fueled party is a great opportunity to shop local plant-based businesses while enjoying tasty food and drinks. From tarot readings to DJs and vegan ice cream, you’ll find everything you’ve been looking for plus the unexpected.

Beauty and the Beast Cocktail Experience

Taking place at the Vancouver Alpen Club (Deutsches Haus), this immersive pop-up cocktail experience lets guests step into the enchanted and cursed world of The beauty and the Beast, but with alcoholic beverages.

Along the way, you’ll have the chance to create your own delicious, bespoke themed cocktails in this escape room, theater show, and adventure all rolled into one.

Richmond Night Market 2022

The Richmond Night Market is North America’s largest night market and this year’s theme is Summer Magic Rainbow. The popular annual event draws crowds ready to experience row upon row of vibrant cuisine; there are more than 500 different international food products this year.

Fort Langley Night Markets

The free weekly community event is presented by Fort Langley Project and features more than 40 local vendors, food trucks and beverage vendors, live entertainment and more.
