It is remarkable to think that the holidays are approaching. Just as 2020 seemed to last forever, 2021 has gone by so quickly. And now the Carmel community is gearing up for what will be a holiday season for the ages. With the return of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt, the long list of artists coming to the Center for the Performing Arts and Feinstein’s at the Carmichael Hotel, the hotel itself, and the restaurants and shops located at the Carmel City Center, all create the synergy that The town of Carmel’s administration had envisioned long before the famous ice rink and holiday market debuted in Carter Green.
We spoke with a few of the speakers about what they are planning for this season in terms of guest experiences and how each of these entities will contribute to an overall mood of vacation fun and amazing activities. There really is something for everyone, so be sure to make Carmel your vacation destination this season!
Carmel Christkindlmarkt returns to Carter Green
Carmel Christkindlmarkt has become Indiana’s premier vacation offering, attracting more than half a million people since it opened. A massive poll by USA Today’s travel media group 10BEST named Carmel Christkindlmarkt the # 1 winner of the 2019 USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Award Contest for Best Vacation Market. Additionally, the market received the distinction of being the Best Christmas Market in Indiana State by Taste of Home magazine in 2017.
After canceling last year’s Christkindlmarkt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the market will be back from November 20 to December 24. More than 40 vendors will sell a variety of German food and drink, handmade gifts, crafts and more at Carmel Christkindlmarkt 2021.
“There are so many wonderful things going on in the market,” said CEO and Market Master Maria Murphy. “Of course there is the pavilion, and it’s going to be amazing. It’s outdoor and suitable for COVID-19 and it will be a place for people to come and listen to a polka band and other entertainment throughout the market and into March to watch the ice carving and all. which will take place at Carter Green— post-trade.
Murphy continued, “Another thing that I think is going to be really cool this year is that the Actor’s Theater of Indiana will be presenting their ‘Holiday Revue’ on Saturdays and Sundays all over the market. Admission is free and they will perform on stage in the brand new pavilion.
In addition to a myriad of new additions and a range of performances that will be on offer at this year’s Market, Murphy has announced that there will be a special Hanukkah (also spelled Hanukkah) service on Wednesday, December 1 at the Market. “There will be a lighting of a giant menorah, and there will be a Hanukkah celebration on stage. So we are also going to schedule Hanukkah music around the lighting of the menorah.

The exceptional holiday season at the Center for the Performing Arts
Center CEO / President Jeff McDermott shared his thoughts on the holiday synergy that is literally being created on the Centre’s lawn.
“I think what’s happening here is exactly what our city leaders had envisioned to happen,” McDermott said. “They [city leadership] wanted the Center and this campus to be truly a central hub and a meeting place where people can celebrate all that is great in this community.
McDermott continued, “The Carmel Farmers Market and Carmel Christkindlmarkt attract hundreds of thousands of people to our campus each year, and these people come here and explore the grounds. They look at our offers and buy tickets for shows. And now with the Carmichael Hotel here and all it has to offer, it really does [Carmel] a destination and an opportunity to get away from it all. The Center has six resident companies and three locations, and things are happening at Feinstein’s at the Carmichael Hotel as well. Can you imagine a greater celebration of life, music and art? I think it’s a credit to the city leaders and to the community for supporting everything. It’s also a credit to the Carmichael Hotel, the Christkindlmarkt, the Center and its resident businesses, the Great American Songbook Foundation, and the Carmel Farmers Market for all of those working in harmony to make it all happen.

Carmichael Hotel and Feinstein’s at Carmichael Hotel Prepare to Shine
Carmichael Hotel General Manager Jamie Hopwood is excited about a holiday season for the hotel and its guests, especially as the Christkindlmarkt was closed due to the pandemic during the inaugural holiday season of the hotel.
“From a winter wonderland perspective, I think the Christkindlmarkt Hotel and Experience is a perfect place for a weekday getaway, not just a weekend getaway,” Hopwood said. “I think the middle of the week will be a great time for families to bring people in where it might not be as busy as the weekends and people can enjoy everything Carmel has to. offer during the week. “
Hopwood continued, “From a sales perspective, we’ve booked quite a few holiday parties, and this will definitely be the most amazing place to have a smaller, more intimate holiday party or holiday meal with a show here [at Hotel Carmichael] with Christkindlmarkt happening right outside.
Feinstein’s at the Carmichael Hotel Cabaret and Kelley Nichols, Event Operations Manager, added: “We are excited about the demographics coming to Christkindlmarkt this year and the number of people it will bring. We plan to do more shows during the week, especially the second and third weeks of December, to attract these customers. We are very excited for this!

The Cake Bake Shop brings its magic to the city center
If you haven’t experienced the vacation at The Cake Bake Shop in downtown Carmel, you haven’t truly experienced the splendor of the vacation. Along with her renowned cakes and delicious food, restaurateur Gwendolyn Rogers’ holiday decor is iconic in itself. From lively polar bears to the exquisite Christmas trees and garlands that line the restaurant’s interior, to the splendid exterior decor, Rogers and his staff add a special ingredient to the mix that is the epicenter of a Carmel vacation.
“Downtown Carmel was the perfect location for my second location,” Rogers said. “It was a fairly recent build at the time, which allowed me to build my store from scratch. I wanted to include all of the wonderful design components that I couldn’t add in my Broad Ripple Village store due to its small size. What makes my second location so amazing is the people. I will be eternally grateful to Bruce and Denise Cordingley. They are the ones who convinced me to open at Carmel City Center. It’s the wonderful hosts and the other shops that create the “synergy”. We are a great place to visit, and everyone who comes here celebrates all the finer things in life. Great food, great music, culture, art, beauty, magic and most of all your family, friends and loved ones. It is an honor to be a part of it. “
