BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The goal of Feeding Chittenden’s Community Kitchen Academy is to teach people how to cook so they can start a new career, and a recent graduate shows that it can be done.

Maritela’s Filipino Baked Goods owner Raven Antonio said she doesn’t even realize the importance of the Filipino community here in Vermont.

It was this community and the surrounding communities that made his dream come true.

“Filipino cuisine is very cultural,” said Antonio, “It has been passed down from generation to generation. “

The name, Maritela’s, is a combination of the names of her grandmothers, two people who she says were great food inspirations.

But bringing food to life took some training. In the Feeding Chittenden Community Cooking Academy.

“If only I could learn the professional skills to learn how to do it,” Antonio said.

Through the academy, she learned new cooking skills, as well as some of the business skills needed to start an online store. One of the chiefs in charge of the academy described Antonio as a dream student.

“She laid the foundation and she applied all of these things and she built this thing for herself, which is awesome,” said academy chef James Logan, “it’s a good product and a quality product.”

Chef James described Antonio as a hard worker and, after all, she was balancing a full-time job, school and academy.

Antonio isn’t the only one who has found success at Community Kitchen Academy, graduates have left to start new businesses, work in kitchens, or serve the community.

For now, she is making Instagram her primary platform, but she has said that as she continues to grow her business, she knows the academy teachers will be there for the moment. to help.

“They have been a great help moving forward because they will always be there, they will always be a helping hand to love helping me and being a helping hand in a very, very small way”, Antonio said.

Maritela’s will have a pop-up store at the University Mall on Black Friday, as well as before Christmas.
