Couple start vegan bakery from the kitchen


A COUPLE from Henley has launched a new online vegan bakery.

Kerina Newell and Joshua Gaillet work in their home kitchen in Adwell Square and offer 18 different types of baked goods, including seven brownies, six cakes and five shortbread cookies.

Products can be shipped anywhere in England, Wales or Scotland and can also be picked up by locals.

The couple, both 31, named their business Bam Bam Vegan after their nicknames for each other.

Monsieur Gaillet is a pastry chef who began his training at the age of 16 in his native Brittany.

Miss Newell, from Wiltshire, said: “Joshua worked full time from the age of 16 and he always dreamed of starting his own business and we thought, ‘Why not put our skills together? “I have a background in purchasing and communications, which I studied at Bournemouth University. So I take care of operations and social networks and I research all the ingredients.

“The business took about six months to set up and during that time I was doing the box designs, coming up with the name and brand, and Joshua working on the recipes.

“We wanted to create our favorite household treats without compromising on flavor. ”

The couple first met in 2014 while traveling in Australia. They then traveled to Indonesia and Europe before moving to Henley in January 2020.

“We hit it off right away,” Miss Newell said. “We then traveled together a bit in Australia before going to Indonesia.

“We returned to Wiltshire and stayed there for two years before setting off in a motorhome across Europe.

“When we got back, we discussed starting our own business.

“We moved to Henley while Joshua was working at the Hurley House Hotel as a pastry chef for about a year and then the covid came along so we were like, ‘Why not start our own home business? “

“In the beginning we had very good feedback at Henley – we had exceptional reviews. It was going very well but has slowed since then.

“With any small business it can always be quite slow, but we’re very optimistic – we’re both positive. Products manufactured by Mr. Gailett do not contain eggs, dairy products, gelatin, or chemicals.

Miss Newell has ensured that the packaging is environmentally friendly, compostable and recyclable.

She said: “It was about two years after we met that we became vegans. We did this for several reasons. We are very health conscious and it is a mixture of thinking about the environment, being environmentally conscious and also thinking about cruelty to animals.

The couple are hoping to move to a larger kitchen in the future and are considering opening a vegan cafe.

Mr. Gaillet is also working on new items to complete the range of the bakery. like macaroons and praline cakes.
