The downtown southern restaurant, Moonshine Patio & Grill, expanded with a new on-site cocktail bar late last year. Parents open December 30, 2021 at 303 Red River Street.
Kinfolk’s cocktail list is divided into four sections: Fine, Old Fashioned and Improved Drinks, Daisies and Sparkling. Guests will receive a welcome cocktail. Then there are the rare whiskeys and other spirits. On the catering side, on the deck are the macaroons from La Patisserie. Future options will develop with cold cuts, cheese and chocolates.
Moonshine co-founders Larry Perdido and Chuck Smith oversee the bar, operations manager Joe Nguyen, spirits and education curator Tom Koerner, bar manager Elizabeth Rakun and bartender Brian Bounds. Koerner had recently been Managing Director of Seven Grand and Las Perlas. Prior to that he worked in bars in Beijing, London and Austin. Perdido and Smith wanted to open the bar in this specific space (the restaurant cellar) in order to honor the history of the building (the site Explain that someone had made wine in space in the 1860s).
His schedules starts at 5 p.m. Thursday to Sunday. Masks are mandatory when not seated.
Chronicle has a new food editor
There are a new food editor at the local alt-weekly Austin Chronicle. Melanie Haupt takes over the post recently vacated by Jessi Cape over the summer. Haupt wrote for the newspaper for a while (often in the food section) and had worked with the late Virginia B. Wood. She wrote a book detailing the history of the Austin restaurant, Historic Austin Restaurants: The Capital’s Cuisine Through the Generations, and is a former associate editor of Eater Austin.
Downtown taco restaurant sprawls across North Austin
Downtown taco restaurant Taquero Mucho is opening its second location in North Austin at 11101 Burnet Road starting Friday, January 7. The menu remains the same: tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, quesadillas and more, as well as margaritas, micheladas, CBD drinks, and weekend brunch. The new space is decorated in the same aesthetic as the original: lots of pink, tiles, a bar counter, printed wallpaper and neon. The hours are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. Seareinas, Revival Coffee, Mala Santa and Gabriela’s South are also owned by the restaurant’s parent company, Gabriela’s Group, co-founders and siblings Gabriela Bucio and Arturo Bucio.
