Farmer’s Market Celebrates “Strawberry Days”

0

Everything is coming Roses! No, wait…… STRAWBERRIES! Although the Strawberry Full Moon does not occur until June 14 (usually the last full moon of spring or the first of summer), this moon name has been used by many indigenous peoples to “mark the ripening of the ‘June-bearing'”. strawberries” (Farmers Almanac). June is likely when “June-bearing” strawberries ripen further north. But ours are ripening now… the first ones were available last Saturday at the market, and others will be available each of the next few weeks (timing and quantities depend of course on temperatures and sunshine).

Strawberries in season are such a treat; you can keep them of course (fresh frozen, jams), but it’s good to have just enough to eat fresh, to slice and eat with shortbread and cream, or alone or associated with rhubarb for a tart. Several vendors had freshly picked berries last week, but they didn’t last long. But for this coming Saturday, as well as the next, the Fayette County Farmer’s Market will be celebrating “Strawberry Days.” Not only will our local strawberry vendors sell fresh strawberries, but other vendors may offer “promotions” related to their products and “all things strawberry”.

Two additional special events are planned for this festive Saturday. David Huffman and the Bluegrass Ramblers will perform from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. This week’s market kids activity will be a fun scavenger hunt full of wholesome clues. See Mrs. Debra at the Market Information Tent to start and end the treasure hunt; attendees will “win” a set of marbles to be picked up at the Katrina Greens & Greenery kiosk.

The market is open Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to noon and is located in the municipal parking lot at the corner of South Main and East East streets in Washington. CH SNAP EBT food benefit cards and credit/debit cards are accepted. Those who use the SNAP EBT card for food purchases receive matching “Produce Perks” tokens ($1 for $1) valid only for fruits, vegetables, and food-producing plants. So, “buy one, get one” for up to $25 EVERY market day. Five dollar coupons will again be available to FAYETTE COUNTY Farm Bureau members at each Saturday market; these can be spent at the Wednesday and Saturday markets.
