Michigan’s Best Local Dishes: Peppers and Pumpkin Spice Elevate Classic French Recipes at Ellen’s Fine Goods

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – When it comes to fine baking, Ellen “Ellie” White has her own opinion.

White, owner of Ellen’s Fine Goods, launched her bakery in September 2020 after being made redundant due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She started at home but now works in the kitchen of Milk + Honey in Milan, where she moved in March 2021.

White likes to give classic pastries his own touch.

“I can use this classic French technique and just add all the flavors I make,” White said. “Anytime there is liquid, you can brew (it). “

Her favorite flavors include citrus and summer fruits

“I really like the crisp, punchy flavors,” White said. “I’ve been really into peppers lately.”

Recent pastries have included pumpkin and spice macaroons, a vanilla cake with a caramel apple filling, and tarts with an apple cider reduction.

White’s products are all made to order. While she mostly does custom work, she also sells pre-ordered holiday boxes.

“I like that aspect,” she said. “Sometimes it’s tough, but I keep my menu pretty tight.”

The offers include cakes, tarts, macaroons, biscuits and cookies.

Customers can pick up their orders at Milk + Honey, 508 County St. in Milan; at Bløm Meadworks 100 South Fourth Avenue in Ann Arbor; or at White.
