Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Vegano Italiano brings New York-style vegan pizza to Ypsilanti

YPSILANTI, MI — With 20-inch New York-style pesto pizzas and pastas, Vegano Italiano has had an “incredible” few months since opening, according to owner Maryrose Angelo.

Vegano Italiano, opened in Ypsilanti in October 2021. True to its name, the restaurant serves a variety of vegan Italian dishes, including pesto pasta, eggplant cutlets and vegetable lasagna.

Fan favorites so far have included the meatball sub, Utica riggies, tzatziki fries and the 20-inch New York-style cheese pizza, a recent addition to the menu. Angelo also added macaroni and cheese and a roasted red pepper melt sandwich to the options available.

Many of his menu items are high in protein, Angelo said, bolstered by swaps like chickpea flour for wheat flour and the addition of pine nuts and a variety of beans. Other swaps include using homemade ricotta made with almonds and Violife, a hypoallergenic cheese alternative, for dishes with mozzarella or smoked provolone.

Vegano Italiano also offers baked goods from Botanical Bakeshop, an all-vegan bakery based in Milan.

The Ypsilanti community has welcomed the vegan restaurant, Angelo said.

“The community itself has been great,” Angelo said. “We had people from all over Michigan. We had people from (Mount) Clemens, Saginaw area, west side, all came here. So it’s been amazing, and I think it’s kind of cool that people chose us as a travel destination.

Although Vegano Italiano currently only offers take-out, Angelo plans to move to a full-service restaurant. She also plans to introduce Saturday lunch specials soon.

“We just started looking for places that have food options, which would allow us to expand the menu a bit and do different dishes,” Angelo said. “So stay tuned.”
