After opening six stores dedicated to DC-based manufacturers, Shop Made in DC partners Stacey Price and Michael Babin are turning to neighboring Virginia.

The Shop Made team unveiled a website during the pandemic dedicated to Commonwealth artisans. It became the Made in Virginia brick-and-mortar store, which opened Thursday in Old Town Alexandria, with products from 120 Virginia manufacturers.

Like DC stores, the Virginia version features home decorations, jewelry, and beauty products created by local artisans. Some items are Virginia-themed – think cherry wood cutting boards in the shape of the state and an old town-inspired candle that smells of dogwood, the state flower. A refrigerator is stocked with wine, beer, and cider from Virginia growers, and the Rewild plant store, which also recently expanded to Northern Virginia, sells leafy plants and potters.

The store itself is decorated by the makers, from the painted wall depicting an Alexandrian streetscape to the vinyl logo on the entrance. A mural by Chandra Osann, the artist behind the Big Girl Press lettering brand, embodies Shop Made’s mission to champion local creations: Osann, whose motivational prints are sold in the Virginia store, has started his business after attending a Shop Made in DC course.

Speaking of classes, Virginia’s showcase will host workshops from the store’s makers, with classes in mixed media collages, soy candle making, handmade ceramics, and more. Creatives can use the space and supplies for free every Sunday during the weekly Crafternoons or attend wine and painting nights.

The Shop Made team already has their eyes set on new locations for the Virginia-centric concept. A small boutique is expected to move into Buzz Bakeshop Alexandria before the end of the year.
