He baked elaborate cakes for Derek Jeter, John Legend, Sophía Vergara, Carmelo Anthony, Brook Shields and other celebrities. Today, pastry chef Thiago Silva brings his talents to Newton.
Winner of several Food Network pastry shows, including “Dessert Games” and an iteration of “Chopped,” Silva channels her talents into opening SALT, a pastry shop that will debut at 792 Beacon St. in Newton’s Piccadilly Square early next year. year.
While there are few details on the upcoming bakery menu, visitors can expect to find pastries, viennoiseries (Viennese-style baked goods), breads, take-out, personalized cakes, chocolates and coffee.
Silva – who was born in Brazil and raised in Queens, New York – made his baking debut in high school, when he enrolled in the Careers Through Culinary Arts program. From there, he cut his chops at various New York restaurants including Olives, Abe & Arthur’s, Catch, and Union Fare. Meanwhile, he was baking party cakes for a growing list of celebrity clients, including the New York Giants’ Super Bowl XLVI cake.
In 2016, Silva and her family moved to Massachusetts, where the pastry chef became director of chocolate at Chew, a food innovation lab in the Fenway. After four years there, Silva decided to open SALT, which will join other places in the Piccadilly Square neighborhood like Thistle & Leek, Baramor, Pho Viet’s II and Blackbird Donuts.
“I’ve dreamed of my own store ever since I first walked into a kitchen, in what feels like a long time ago in New York City,” Silva told Boston.com. “When I moved to Massachusetts for a work opportunity, I felt like I moved to Massachusetts for more, and voila, you meet the right people and the dreams start to come true. I am more than happy to bring a pastry to the Newton Center as I am a Newton resident. [I’m] happy to bring quality products to my community.
