The Syracuse Orange are 6-0 and even though they finish the regular season at 6-6, the cake is ready to be enjoyed…but you can also wait and try to enjoy something better .
The Orange will head to a bowling match. They’ll be seeded for at least two more weeks and next week they’ll play for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. No one could have predicted this in spring, summer or fall. It hasn’t been pretty, but you don’t get style points in football. All that matters is that Syracuse found a way to finish each game with the most points on the scoreboard.
They did so despite injuries and turnovers or both, as was the case against NC State yesterday. Keep in mind that Syracuse’s defense held the game 17-9 in a goal-line streak where Garrett Williams, Duce Chestnut, Mikel Jones and Leon Lowery were out of the game. The players stepped up and kept NC State out of the end zone. Then the offense closed the game as they opened it – with a touchdown.
The empty seats that stood out in September were packed as those casual fans saw 5-0 and a top-20 finish and wanted to be part of the fun. It’s the fear of failing to push them off the couches and into the JMA. We’ve shared the recipe for the past few years – it took equal parts victory, promotion and atmosphere to make Saturday afternoons feel like Saturday night basketball games.
I’m sitting here writing this while enjoying a delicious piece of chocolate cake (thanks Sweet Magnolia Bakery). The cake is excellent but the espresso crumble is the bonus that takes it to another level. That’s what the rest of this season is about for the Orange – it’s about what this team can do to make it more memorable.
Can they win at Clemson next week? Could they actually make it to the ACC Championship Game? What about PCP? Dream big Orange fans and let your mind seize all the long-term possibilities. Just promise yourself that you won’t let the next six games ruin this moment.
Orange may have had bigger team goals, but the reality is that a bowling game was going to make this 2022 season a success. They finished this cake and we can all enjoy it…and if they bake something with a little extra along the way, we can enjoy this cake too. Remember, soccer wins don’t have calories, but all that cake can add up.
